Round 1  of the Met. & Southern District IOM championship.
A keen turnout of 18  skippers enjoyed some first class racing at Hampton Court on the 17th February 2013 in the first round of the Met. & Southern District IOM championship. With pleasant sunshine  and a light breeze building to 5-7 mph in the afternoon, 2 fleets were served an  ample helping of close and competitive racing in what was the first outing of  the year for several skippers and boats. The wind was very light in the morning  however and what little there was blew off the lakeside across the Rick Pond. The Hampton Court race team were forced
to call up every marker buoy in their collection in order to set a course providing three separate windward legs over the width of the lake.

Racing was at all times very close and obtaining an inside  overlap at the end of the shorter offwind legs was especially important. By lunch time there was enough wind to keep the skippers on their toes. By 1600hrs nine complete races had been sailed and Trevor Binks emerged the clear winner  despite an after lunch rally by Dave Andrews who won races 5,6 and 7 with his  new Britpop. Second place went to Chris Treagust, winning only one race but  gaining consistently good results for the remaining races. Vernon Appleton finished third and Dave Andrews fourth. All in all, the top 6 skippers had very  little between them in terms of boat speed. An excellent days racing. My thanks  to the Hampton Court race team for the first class support.
