M&S district R10r championship, 10th march 2013 (hosted by HCMYC)
From an original entry of 15, 13 boats from 7 different clubs took to the water for this event on a bitterly cold and blustery day with a 10-13 mph north-easterly wind which on occasions gusted to 20-25 mph. However, the wind direction enabled a long course to be set with plenty of beats
thus ensuring testing and exciting racing.
The difficult conditions took their toll on boats and on a number of occasions skippers had to temporarily retire to effect repairs. Sadly, both Dave Andrews and Colin Trower had to retire from the event – Dave because of a broken rudder sustained when launching for the first race
and Colin due to problems encountered when sailing his brand new boat for the first time.
Right from the outset, Hugh McAdoo, Peter Wiles and Vernon Appleton established themselves as the skippers to watch and by lunchtime, Hugh had laid a firm claim to the top position. After lunch, Hugh continued to improve his lead and Peter Wiles continued to hold on to second
place despite a late rally by Vernon Appleton who himself was pressed by Andy Lunt for third place. 11 races were sailed overall and prizes were awarded to the top 5 skippers as follows:-
1st place – Hugh McAdoo (Guildford MYC) sailing a “Diamond” – 11pts
2nd place – Peter Wiles (Poole RYC) sailing a “Tension” – 23pts
3rd place – Vernon Appleton (Coalhouse Fort MYC) sailing a “Diamond” – 27pts
4th place – Andy Lunt (MYSA) sailing a “Prizm” – 30pts
5th place – Martin Shaw (Hampton Court MYC) sailing a “Prizm” – 35pts
Despite the intense cold, a successful day’s racing was had and our thanks go to the race team of Laurie Bower (PRO), Terry Colson, Peter Townsend and John Burch for their efforts.
The event clearly showed a new level of enthusiasm for the R10R class at District level – a view well supported by the success of our club’s R10R series which has seen 10 or more boats taking to the water.
